The delivery of criminal justice increasingly demands a multi-agency response to fight crime effectively and ensure that transnational crime does not escape the reach of criminal justice agencies. There are some two million professionals employed in criminal justice agencies across the EU. However, the delivery of criminal justice not only engages the police, courts and penal institutions, but also social workers, victim support organisations and those who secure accountability, such as journalists.

Drawing on Abertay University’s expertise in EU justice and home affairs law, the LLM EU Security and Transnational Criminal Justice distance learning programme provides you with the opportunity to develop a systematic understanding of the law as it relates to EU transnational criminal justice and security.

For those with an undergraduate degree in law, the programme offers you the opportunity to develop a specialism that will set you apart from other graduates and help you to develop an exciting career in the EU criminal justice arena.

For those already working in criminal justice or a related field, the programme provides you with the flexibility to continue your professional development while working in the industry.

Dr Mo Egan, who leads the LLM teaching team says, “The LLM’s online distance learning medium creates an environment where recent graduates and busy professionals are able to come together to deepen their knowledge of the EU’s legal architecture in the area of freedom, security and justice.”

The programme is delivered online and there are no classes or residential weekends to attend. The modules are delivered consecutively and each module is delivered over a four week period. Modules can also be taken individually as continuing professional development without assessment. You can choose to take assessments later and receive the academic credits with the option of exiting the programme with a PG Certificate on the completion of 60 SCQF credits (30 ECTS), a PG Diploma after 120 SCQF credits (60 ECTS), or the LLM after 180 SCQF credits (90 ECTS) and completion of your final dissertation.

The LLM’s syllabus addresses EU criminal justice and law enforcement frameworks, including Europol and Eurojust. Specialist modules include transnational legal responses to counter terrorism, cyber-crime and the proceeds of crime.

The programme is particularly timely as membership of the EU continues to evolve and criminal justice professionals need to know how to cooperate across changing borders. They need to know how to protect victims of crime from further victimisation in other member states. They also need to know how to share data while protecting individual rights to privacy.

Abertay provides a stimulating research and networking environment for its postgraduate students. When you study your LLM at Abertay, you will become an associate member of the inter-disciplinary collaborative research network, ‘Policing and European Studies’, which is run by the LLM team.
