After serving her country as a cryptologist in the U.S. Navy, graduate student Lindsay Zike came to the UW with the dream of finishing her degree. But navigating civilian life after the military wasn’t easy. Her vision to create an easier path for future student veterans led to the opening of a new student center on campus — by veterans, for veterans.

Hi! If I have a good GPA, president of a club as well as being involved in others, have many extracurriculars, but have low SAT and ACT scores, what do you think my chances are of getting into the UW?

Hello Anonymous,

The University of Washington seeks students who can benefit from its wealth of academic and cultural opportunities and contribute to its amazing energy and rich diversity of experience. Choosing students from a competitive group of applicants requires a selection process that looks beyond grades and standardized tests…While these factors are important, they tell only part of an applicant’s story.

The University uses an individualized application review more typically found at smaller private universities and colleges. In addition to grade-point average (GPA) and test scores, the University takes into account many aspects of an applicant’s achievements and personal history.

To learn more about our review process please check out the following site: https://admit.washington.edu/Admission/Freshmen/Review

Best wishes!

Places to Visit in Minnesota!

Minnesota welcomes you sign

Welcome to “The Land of 10,000 Lakes!” Believe it or not, that’s not an exaggeration; in fact, The North Star State has 11,842 lakes, each spanning at least 10 acres.

If you end up studying in Minnesota as an international student, you’ll have a great deal of time to study since its home to ten of the coldest counties in the county, but trust us, the snow will melt! Of course after every winter comes the sunshine of spring, and when the weather does warm up you’ll want to head outdoors.

Here are three fun places to start:

  • Canoeing the Boundary Waters—the Superior National Forest offers hiking, hunting, fishing and a fair share of camping. With 80 entry points and 1,200 miles of canoe routes, Boundary Waters offers a uniquely American experience, perfect for a weekend away.
  • Camping on Lake Superior— another great activity within the Superior National Forest is camping on the north shore beaches of Lake Superior. If you prefer to live like the locals, park somewhere near the beach, bring a blanket, and simply camp out under the stars. Of course, you may want to bring friends and other supplies to enjoy the Minnesota night “au naturel.”
  • Broomball—what’s “broomball,” you ask? Think hockey, but instead of skates and sticks imagine rubber-soled shoes and brooms. Sure, it sounds like a kid’s game but the amateur aspect is one of the sport’s charms. Founded in Canada and growing in popularity around the world, broomball is played in many cities’ public parks during the winters. Depending how much you learn to love the sport, check out the broomball National Championship game.  After all, Minnesota has hosted it eight of the past fifteen years.

Sound interested? Be sure to check out great schools in Minnesota!

Preparing a Portfolio for a Career in Public Relations

Businessman with office supplies laptop and finance business icons

In the majority of careers, having a well-crafted resume and cover letter will be enough to land an interview with a potential employer, but that’s not necessarily the case within the dynamic field of public relations, or PR for short. Since this field in particular revolves primarily around a candidates writing, editing and research abilities, employers need proof of your skills – and that’s where your portfolio comes into play.

First Things First.  What is a Portfolio?

A portfolio is where you will house your writing samples and various pieces of design, copy writing, editing, research and overall accomplishments – everything related to your personal development in the field of public relations.  It’s important to have both an online portfolio (WordPress is a great free resource) and a physical copy to take with you to interviews.  Remember that both versions need to be extremely professional and free from any spelling errors to ensure you showcase your work to the very best of your abilities.

In case you’re still in college, or a fresh graduate and can’t think of many pieces of work to include in your portfolio yet, that’s okay. It’s important to remember that your portfolio will develop as your career does.  Straight out of college employers will expect to see work from your internships and PR-related classes, but as you take on new challenges, your portfolio will become a direct reflection (and even more impressive)!

Now that you know what a portfolio is and what it’s used for, let’s dive into creating your masterpiece.

Creating a Great PR Portfolio in Three Simple Steps:

Step #1: Save

To have the most impressive portfolio possible, you’re going to need documents to include, right?

During your internships and throughout college it’s extremely important to save every assignment from your design, communication and public relations classes — every press release, essay, newsletter and every single piece of research, along with several pieces showing off your graphic design or computer skills (using programs like InDesign or Photoshop).

When I was personally attending college, I had a huge box in my dorm room that I would throw assignments into after they were graded.  For work that was submitted electronically, I kept a folder on my desktop labeled ‘Portfolio’ and added documents as necessary, making it really easy later on to sift through what I would actually use, and what would ultimately end up in the trash bin.

Step #2: Sift

When you’re getting ready to start applying for a position using all of your new-found PR skills it will be time to start sifting through all that you have saved and decide which documents should be included and which don’t quite make the cut. Don’t feel the need to incorporate everything you have saved. Your portfolio should be concise and should only include only your best work!

According to PRSSA, a good portfolio should include the following:

  1. A clean copy of your resume and cover letter
  2. A few writing samples
  3. One or two examples of your editing abilities
  4. Clean copies of pieces you’ve created from editing software (like Photoshop)
  5. Evidence of any specific skills or professional affiliations

Your portfolio can also include letters of reference and other documents that you feel highlight what you can offer to the company, and be sure to tailor it to each job in particular.

Step #3: Share

Once you’ve decided what to include in your portfolio, it will be time to share it with the world!  After you’ve created your online portfolio, be sure to include a direct link within your personal email signature, as well as within your LinkedIn profile, and your resume (close to where you’ve listed your contact information) too.  This will help employers easily find examples of your work when sifting through applications.

This can’t be stressed enough: spend time on the presentation of your portfolio. A leather binder is always a good choice for the physical copy, complete with plastic sheets to hold your writing examples and a table of contents to help your employer sift through the various sections. Be sure both your physical and electronic portfolios are as well organized and concise as possible, and completely free from any errors.

Need an example to help you get started? Here’s a link to my personal online portfolio.

Although developing a portfolio for a career in public relations may seem overwhelming at first, a professional portfolio can really help you stand out, and what better way to prove your skills than through your own writing and designs! If you get stuck or need some help with your portfolio, your PR professors can be a great resource, or the career services office at your college or university.

Good luck!

Develop Your Career in EU Criminal Justice

StudyLink Study Abroad StudyLink Study Abroad - Study Abroad Course Search, Advice and Information

The delivery of criminal justice increasingly demands a multi-agency response to fight crime effectively and ensure that transnational crime does not escape the reach of criminal justice agencies. There are some two million professionals employed in criminal justice agencies across the EU. However, the delivery of criminal justice not only engages the police, courts and penal institutions, but also social workers, victim support organisations and those who secure accountability, such as journalists.

Drawing on Abertay University’s expertise in EU justice and home affairs law, the LLM EU Security and Transnational Criminal Justice distance learning programme provides you with the opportunity to develop a systematic understanding of the law as it relates to EU transnational criminal justice and security.

For those with an undergraduate degree in law, the programme offers you the opportunity to develop a specialism that will set you apart from other graduates and help you to develop an exciting career in the EU criminal justice arena.

Abertay University

Abertay University

For those already working in criminal justice or a related field, the programme provides you with the flexibility to continue your professional development while working in the industry.

Dr Mo Egan, who leads the LLM teaching team says, “The LLM’s online distance learning medium creates an environment where recent graduates and busy professionals are able to come together to deepen their knowledge of the EU’s legal architecture in the area of freedom, security and justice.”

The programme is delivered online and there are no classes or residential weekends to attend. The modules are delivered consecutively and each module is delivered over a four week period. Modules can also be taken individually as continuing professional development without assessment. You can choose to take assessments later and receive the academic credits with the option of exiting the programme with a PG Certificate on the completion of 60 SCQF credits (30 ECTS), a PG Diploma after 120 SCQF credits (60 ECTS), or the LLM after 180 SCQF credits (90 ECTS) and completion of your final dissertation.

The LLM’s syllabus addresses EU criminal justice and law enforcement frameworks, including Europol and Eurojust. Specialist modules include transnational legal responses to counter terrorism, cyber-crime and the proceeds of crime.

The programme is particularly timely as membership of the EU continues to evolve and criminal justice professionals need to know how to cooperate across changing borders. They need to know how to protect victims of crime from further victimisation in other member states. They also need to know how to share data while protecting individual rights to privacy.

Abertay provides a stimulating research and networking environment for its postgraduate students. When you study your LLM at Abertay, you will become an associate member of the inter-disciplinary collaborative research network, ‘Policing and European Studies’, which is run by the LLM team.

You will have the opportunity to attend and participate in the network’s annual conference, which attracts a wide range of international speakers including practitioners, academics and postgraduate researchers. It’s a great way to make valuable connections with those already working in the industry.

Whether you’re looking to develop a specialism in transnational justice or advance your career through professional development, the LLM provides you with the flexibility and academic expertise to achieve your goals.

Healthy Eating in the USA

Salad of grilled chicken tenderloins with avocado, tomatoes, red onion, green beans, spinach and arugula. Delicious healthy eating.

Salad of grilled chicken tenderloins with avocado, tomatoes, red onion, green beans, spinach and arugula. Delicious healthy eating.

Healthy eating in a new country? It may sound a little hard, but not to worry, we’re here to help!

As an international student it can be extremely difficult knowing what your dining options will be in an unfamiliar country, not to mention being able to differentiate the healthy choices from the not so healthy ones. Of course you can’t go wrong with ensuring a good amount of fruits and vegetables meet your dietary cut, but let’s be honest, the USA is famous for packaged, processed, and the worst of all, fast food.

To make things a little easier, I’ve narrowed down eating in the USA to three categories: grocery store shopping, traditional restaurant dining, and fast food.

Option 1: Grocery Stores

Grocery stores are generally seen as the best option when trying to eat healthy in the United States because the options are simply endless, and everything in a package is legally required by the US government to have a nutrition label.  Of course grocery stores come stocked with both the healthy and [terribly] unhealthy options, but glutton free, vegan and vegetarian foods are thankfully becoming more and more popular.

Traditional grocery stores are starting to have entire rows of these ultra-healthy selections, and nowadays there are several chains of ‘whole food’ markets focused entirely on these healthy options, with huge selections of produce, organic meat, snacks and even organic beer!  If you are a true ‘health nut’ these whole food markets even offer organic personal products like soaps and cleaners for a well-rounded, and extremely healthy shopping experience.

Not sure how to read nutrition labels?

Option 2: Restaurants

In terms of sit-down restaurants, the quantity of healthy choices will usually depend on the restaurant that you choose to visit. Salads, of course, are pretty standard, but as a connoisseur of the healthy too, I’m sure you’re generally going to need more than a simple salad for a meal.  Luckily, within the United States restaurants may specialize in a specific type of food, but will still have a pretty extensive selection of dining options.  For example, it’s not uncommon for a sit-down restaurant that specializes in pizza to also have options for pasta, wings, wraps and salads too.

When looking over the menu, there are likely to be smaller sections labeled ‘lower calorie options’ or something of the equivalent, helping you narrow down the best choices for your waistline. More modern restaurants will also use small symbols for vegetarian and gluten free menu items to help you stay within your dietary references.

One great thing that I will note about the US is that as long as you have four quarters in your pocket, you won’t go hungry! America has fast food restaurants on nearly every corner, serving everything from burgers and sea salt fries to ice cream sundaes, but being so fast 80% of the time these restaurants will rank at the very bottom of the healthy scale.  If you aren’t in search of grease as one of the main ingredients of your lunch, there are healthier options like Panera Bread, Subway or Pita Pit.  These fast food options aren’t quite as plentiful, but they do offer fresh sandwiches and wraps (both the healthy and unhealthy ones), with side choices of baked chips or vegetables in most cases.

Option 3: Fast Food

Regardless of where you may find fast food, generally you will be able to track down the nutrition information from all or at least most menu items.  Sometimes this information is available in a brochure like pamphlet (upon request), and in some cases in the form of a large poster within the restaurant itself.

Ready for Action?

Now that you’re in a healthy mindset, never forget that a HUGE part of studying abroad is to experience the culture of course, but the food as well!  The US is known for delicious, unique, and ultra-modern dishes that just won’t taste the same in other parts of the world.  After all, you wouldn’t travel to France and not stop at a bakery or two for croissants, right? Be mindful of your waistline and try to make healthy choices when possible, but don’t forget to indulge in new dishes soaked in butter or smothered in chocolate every once in a while!

Are you considering studying nutrition in the US?
