Where Computing and Business Intersect

Management Information Systems programs

The worlds of business and technology are increasingly one in the same. A fact that is made that much more critical by the rapid pace with which technology is evolving. This is the world that university graduates step into nowadays. Out of them, the former students who are best able to work with the latest tech, as well as articulate its usefulness in a business context will be best positioned to succeed.

For such reasons many, in both graduate and undergraduate studies, have decided to go into Management Information Systems (MIS). In addition to promoting a greater acumen and understanding of technology, students themselves come to learn about and design the systems utilized by today’s most modern businesses. They see exactly how such tech allows for managers to make the best possible decisions, not to mention promote ingenuity, efficiency, and added value within a company.

Who are MIS Students?

Who are MIS Students?

Who are MIS Students?

With a foot in each world, MIS students are those who understand both business and computing. MIS Students often can be the ones who communicate between ‘technically minded’ individuals and ‘management/business’ people. For this fact in particular, Computer Science students will sometimes realize they would prefer a career path that deals more with people, like MIS. Being an up-and-coming program, and not as well-known yet, many have remarked that they wish they had heard of options like the program before starting their studies.

Rochester Institute of Technology in New York offer their MIS program that strives to give MIS majors both an understanding of core business fields like finance, marketing, and accounting, as well as proficiency with tech being used in the business world. Not to mention a willingness and ability to pick up new technical skills.

Many, such as the Innovation Center on RIT’s Campus, have remarked how MIS majors often are the student entrepreneurs who stand out; often because they can be the most comfortable fulfilling many different roles. To graduates from the program, like Deniz Kaya (class of 2010), that is a big reason why MIS students are seen as unique.

“[MIS students] have an interest in being technical, but also enjoy being client facing,” Kaya pointed out. “They want to be a part of both conversations.”

Read about the success of other RIT MIS graduates here.

MIS’s Place in Today’s World of Business

MIS coursework prepares students to work with the leading enterprise systems increasingly being employed by both established organizations and new entrepreneurs. They become familiarized with programs that can monitor complex business processes and practices (like SAP), and that provide new levels of business intelligence. MIS graduates are uniquely positioned to use such technology in a business setting.

It’s is because of the awareness and acumen MIS students come to possess that they are well suited for a variety of positions. It’s a varied list which includes: Business Analyst, Project Manager, Data Analyst, Business Intelligence Specialist, or Systems Analyst.

Innovative companies like Google, Space-X, IBM, Intuit, Toyota, Wegmans, JP Morgan Chase have been among those seeking out MIS majors for such positions. The potential business utility to be had from their skills makes MIS students a potential good fit for organizations within a variety of different fields.

The Future for MIS Programs

The Future for MIS Programs

The Future for MIS Programs

An increasing amount of talented educators have begun to teach in MIS programs, because of the success had by many graduates. Talented students attracts talented faculty.

The Department of Labor’s Occupational Outlook has shown just how promising the prospects for such graduates has become in recent years. For ‘Computer and Information Systems Managers’ for instance, a 15% projected growth between 2014 and 2024 (a rate that is much faster than average) has been predicted. Reported median pay in 2015 was also $131,600 a year as well.

MIS programs, at schools like RIT, are trying to make the most of these opportunities for their students; tweaking curriculums to promote an even greater understanding of modern tech and the skills necessary to use them – and learn more. Educators recognize the need to be as versatile as much as we wish for students to be.

MIS students not fearing that initially feeling of discomfort while learning about new tech is crucial. Learning to anticipate, not dread, continuing to learn is what will set them apart.

Kaya pointed out how many MIS students do wish to stay up-to-date with the latest tech. They know how it will make them better prepared for an ever evolving, increasingly tech focused, world.

Saunders College of Business at RIT

Rochester Institute of Technology is one of the nation’s largest technical universities and graduates more STEM students than almost any other private university. As part of RIT, the MIS program at Saunders College is uniquely positioned for excellence and has become the largest and fasting growing business program. The program is recognized by USA Today College Factual, as the #10 MIS program in the nation. Students gain real world experience through an applied curriculum, and paid coop positions through one of the largest and oldest cooperative education programs in the world. Employers have also taken notice where they offer the highest salaries and typically cannot get enough MIS graduates each year.

Making your Money Stretch When on an International Student Budget

If you had a twenty-dollar bill, would you know how many or what types of things you could buy in the United States? As an international student, it is important to have a good idea of what a dollar (or twenty) can buy, specially when on a tight budget.

It may seem like technology will take care of figuring out the exchange rate. This is if you have a computer or phone nearby. However, it is important to know when you are being overcharged for things. That takes more knowledge than just knowing that twenty dollars equals nineteen euros*. Here are some tips to make sure you are getting your money’s worth.

Is that too expensive?

The cost of living will vary based upon your location in the United States. Like in many countries, rent and food tend to be more expensive the closer you get to a city. For example, $20 dollars may buy you groceries for a week in a small US town. The same amount in China (137.5 Yuan*) will buy you food for a week in a 3-4 tier city (small town or rural area). In cities like Beijing or Shanghai, your $20 dollars will buy you roughly the same amount of food as it would in a city like Miami or Los Angeles. However, in Colombia, you can buy approximately three times the amount of food for the same amount of money ($57,900 Pesos*) in a big city like Bogota.

Getting the best deals

If you are trying to save money on your expenses, ask around to make sure you are getting the best deal. Like many college students, you may be on a tight budget, especially if you stay in the US for several years. Many name brand clothing stores in the United States have clearance sales or semi-annual sales. There are also stores that sell past collections from popular brands for a fraction of the price. For instance, if you go shopping for clothes with $20 dollars, this may buy you two shirts in a regular priced store like Old Navy or Target. In India, you could buy twice the amount of clothing for the same twenty dollars (about 1340 Rupees*) as you would in the US in a similar store.

Exchange rates are still important

One of the most volatile movements around the world is money exchange rates. Many factors such as politics, natural disasters, businesses growth, and the overall economy of each country determines currency exchange rates. They change daily and can change many times during the day. Keeping an eye on how much the exchange rates are can save you a lot of money in the long run.

Helpful tools to budget

Nowadays, there is an app to help you budget and save money. Mint is a great and simple app to get you on the right path of creating budget. You can create a budget and it will alert you if you are overspending since it links directly to your bank accounts once you add them. Additionally, your school might offer personal finance counseling to guide you through the finance system in the United States. You can also ask your fellow peers about the average price of things. You may think getting a $20 meal in an average restaurant is a great deal, but if you shop locally, twenty dollars may get you two meals (or more) instead of one.

When it comes to traveling abroad as an international student, one of the most important factors to consider is money. Navigating the exchange rates and knowing when you are paying too much can significantly affect your budget. Your college friends will be a great source of information when it comes to comparing prices on food, clothes and transportation. After all, they are also aiming to save money while they complete their college careers.

*Please note the exchange rates used are based on rates from February 2017

Conquer Public Speaking

The night before I have to speak in public is always the worst. I can’t sleep, I have a pit in my stomach and I think of everything that could go wrong when I am public speaking.

In college I failed at public speaking. In fact, on many occasions when I was presenting I would forget what I was even talking about. I decided then that I would never have a job that required me to speak in public!

Little did I know that my job now requires me to speak in public everyday! By now I’ve presented in front of crowds where the audience is more experienced than I. However, once I am done presenting I feel exhilarated! I’ve hit all of my key topics, engaged my audience and had them leaving my presentation learning something new.

At some point in your life, whether college or in your career, you’ll have to speak in front of a public audience, no matter your career path! It’s time to face it now and conquer public speaking. With my tips you can do it!

Tip #1: Create a script, but don’t write it down

I know how this sounds, but the goal is for you to sound natural when you present. You want to make sure when you present that your message is clear and that you’re hitting all your key points. Write down bullet points for each slide of your presentation. Instead of reading the bullet points elaborate on each one and then run through it out loud. The first time you run through it may not be smooth, but eventually for each bullet you’ll remember what to say in a natural way.

Tip #2: PowerPoints can be powerful

I love using PowerPoint for several reasons. The first is that they are a good tool to engage your audience. You can use images, quotes or graphs to help keep your audience focused. Try using interesting graphs or quotes that speak for itself to make a big impact on your audience.

Use your PowerPoint to help you stay on track. Sometimes I get lost or I find myself talking too much about a topic. I use bullet points to mark what I should talk about next and try to stick to one main point per slide. For each slide you create know the main point of that slide and build on it. Keep in mind that you should only have a few short bullets on each slide, you don’t want to overwhelm your PowerPoint with too much text.

Tip #3:  Practice, practice, practice!

Practice does make perfect! If you’re feeling insecure about your presentation the best way to feel better is to practice. The more you rehearse the more comfortable you’ll feel and the smoother the presentation will sound. Try practicing in front of a mirror, record yourself, or ask a friend to watch. Having feedback or self-review will help you improve your speech, body movement and facial expressions.

What helps me improve is watching other public speakers present. Watching someone else public speak helps me learn new skills that I can bring to my own presentation.

If you are one of those rare people that enjoy public speaking you should look into a major or career that let’s you do just that! Majors like communication, public relation or broadcasting are a good place to start. In those majors you will learn the skills to become a great public speaker.

No matter what your career choice is, whether you’re a TV anchor or a tech engineer that is pitching a new scientific development, having public speaking skills will be useful to you to help you share your voice!
