Fall Festivals and Activities for International Students To Attend In The US

As the leaves turn from green to bright orange, red, and yellow, students like you start pouring into colleges. Although fall in the US always directly correlates with a new school year, getting ready for classes isn’t the only focus students have during this time. The fall semester brings with it a variety of activities that international students should experience while being in the United States. Some of these events can be found in many different cities around the US while others are unique to certain regions of the country. Here are a few popular festivals and activities to seek out and enjoy this fall between classes.

The Renaissance Festival

Personally, this was one of my favorite festivals to go to when I lived in Kansas. The Renaissance Festival opens its doors on Labor Day weekend and goes on until mid-October. This festival displays kings, pirates, gypsies, knights, wizards and more. Artists from the surrounding areas participate to bring a medieval ambiance to your day. They have themed weekends and plenty of entertaining events like jousting, hula hoop competitions, and costumes contests. They also have similar festivals in Minnesota, Florida, Michigan and Missouri. If you want to enjoy a day surrounded by royalty or share a meal with a couple of buccaneers, you will not want to miss this festival.

5K Color Run

If you like to exercise, the Color Run will be a fun activity to attend. The organizers suggest that you wear white clothing because as you make the 5 kilometer run, they will throw colored chalk at you. This of course results in you being covered in different colors and having a great time while being physically active. This 5K can be found in many cities in the US as well as different countries around the world! The 5K Color Run is a family friendly and pet friendly event. Put on your tennis shoes, throw on a white shirt and you will be ready to participate in this 5K!

The Lantern Fest

If you are a fan of Disney movies, this festival is a must. In the movie Tangled, every year during Rapunzel’s birthday, the king, queen, and townspeople release hundreds of lanterns into the air to honor the princess and guide her home. This is what you will see at the Lantern Fest. With your ticket, you will receive a lighter, a flashlight, a lantern and supplies to make s’mores. Once the night has fallen, everyone lights up their lanterns and lets them fly away at the same time. The have live music and food while you wait for the evening and it usually takes place during the fall and winter months in many cities around the US.

Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Carving

The United States produces around 13 million acres of corn. Once the corn has been harvested, it leaves a trail of corn stalks behind. Farmers who host corn mazes carefully plant their corn to create artistic designs that grow into corn mazes or labyrinths. Corn mazes have become popular as it’s a way to support local farmers and it provides a natural tourist attraction for families and friends. This is great fall activity as the corn harvest commences in October and ends late November. Many of these same farmers also plant pumpkin patches nearby so visitors can choose their own Halloween pumpkin directly from the patch. International students throughout the US can enjoy this activity during a weekend while studying in the US.

Halloween!

Costumes, candy, trick-or-treating, and bonfires… Enough said! Halloween is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world. However, in the United States Halloween is the second most popular holiday of the year. The festivities during Halloween are endless. Many colleges and universities will have activities and groups around campus that host Halloween costume parties. If you are an international student in the US, mark your calendar! October 31st is great day to go out and immerse yourself in the cultural festivities of this holiday.

With all of these festivals and activities, international students can distract themselves from their studies for a little while. There are many more festivals and activities that take place during the fall. Don’t forget to get out of your comfort zone, invite some of your new friends to go with you, and make memories during your study abroad experience in the US.

Renting an Apartment without a Financial Background

In the midst of your search for a new apartment for your time studying abroad? Finding your place is only the first (but most exciting) step.

Maybe it’s your first time on your own away from family, or maybe you’ve enjoyed your time at a previous university. But despite your prior experience with embarking to a new university, one hurdle many international students face when studying abroad is how to rent an apartment without any prior financial background.

Student properties help avert their risk of renting to students without income generally through a co-signer or guarantor. (If you’re not to familiar with what a guarantor is check out our quick definition here!) But in some instances, a guarantor may not be immediately accessible for you.

That’s why we’ve partnered with LoftSmart, the US’s leading source for student housing, to come together and help make your move a seamless and delightful process with assistance on how to rent without a financial background. Check out Flywire and LoftSmart’s tips on how to navigate signing your lease without having a substantial financial background.

Forgo a Guarantor with a Higher Deposit

Most apartments give you the option to pay a higher security deposit when signing your lease with little to no financial history. Essentially, the property is mitigating their risk in the event that your or not able to pay a month’s rent, by frontloading your payment. This is a common method in the circumstance that you’re not able to find a guarantor to assist with your lease.

Proof of Financial Assistance

If you’re an international student studying in the U.S., you may have financial aid in the form of a scholarship, loans or the financial backing of your parents that will cover your housing while you’re enrolled in college. In many cases, documentation of this assistance can be utilized in replacement of proof of your own income.

Proof of Income for Your Parents/Guardians

Another method of signing your lease without prior proof of income for yourself is through proof of income from your parents. This is generally the simplest method as the property will generally only require prior pay stubs from your parents, regardless of the country of origin, to verify that if you do not have the means to cover your month’s rent.

Utilize a US Guarantor

The final way to bypass this hurdle is through guarantor matching or services like Jetty. Essentially, these services can assume the risk on your apartment for a fee. The process works like many insurance policies.

FAQ: International Student Housing in the US

The decision to study abroad comes with much excitement but assuredly, with many uncertainties as well. The moment you receive your acceptance letter a rush of emotion may take over as you’re set to spend the next year or more studying at your dream destination!

But along with the excitement of your upcoming move, we’re sure you have a few questions on logistics that coincide with your transition not only to a new university, but to a new country. Of those questions, the question of “where am I going to live?” is at the top of the list.

That’s why we’ve partnered with LoftSmart, the US’s leading source for student housing, to come together and help make your move a seamless and delightful process. To begin, check out Flywire and LoftSmart’s list of the most frequently asked questions we’ve received from international students regarding the student housing industry.

Note: Though the FAQ’s below focus solely on college housing in the US, many of the same terms and policies are reflected across countries worldwide.

What is a lease?
A lease is the contract signed by you and your US apartment complex detailing the cost of rent, how long you’ll be renting, as well as additional contract terms.

What documents will I need when leasing an apartment?
Required documentation for international students differs from property to property, but below is a comprehensive list of documentation that your property manager may ask for you to provide prior to move in.

  • Passport or Visa
  • Verification of your Acceptance to the University
  • Completed I-20 Form
  • Previous Pay Stubs or Additional Income Verification

What is a guarantor?
A guarantor is a third party (traditionally a parent or guardian) who provides security on a signed lease based on their ability to financially afford the lease value.

Do I need a guarantor to sign a lease in the US?
Generally, a guarantor is needed to sign a lease in the US. However, if you are an international student, it is common that the complex will waive the guarantor on your lease and ask that you instead pay a higher deposit fee upfront.

If an alternative method for having a guarantor is not available, does my guarantor have to be a US resident?
In most cases when a guarantor is required, the guarantor must must be a US Citizen. Traditionally, this makes the application process fairly difficult for international students. However, your dedicated personal concierge will work with you on finding a viable guarantor so that you can complete your application and sign your lease seamlessly.

How do security deposits work?
It’s very common that when you sign your lease, a security deposit will be included. Most deposits are around a half of the first month’s rent, but often times less. The deposit is used to cover potential damages (like paint chips, malfunctioned appliances, etc) that will be assessed once you move out.

Do most apartments charge for utilities?
Utilities are handled differently across apartment complexes, but for the most part, there are two structures that will be established in your lease. The first structure is typically with a ‘utility cap’. This means that the utility costs (e.g. refrigeration, electricity, heating, etc) are included in your rent with the ‘cap’ being a limit to the amount of utilities you can use. The majority of residents typically do not have any issues staying within the cap, barring extreme electricity usage. The other option is through a more traditional utility payment structure. In this format, you’ll pay based on usage that month. In these situations, you can typically ask the property manager for the month-to-month utility charges of other residents.

What are fully furnished apartments?
Many international students enter their new university without the initial furniture necessities to move into their new apartment. A fully furnished apartment would likely be the best option in this situation. These options are available at select complexes for an extra fee and generally include beds, dressers, a desk, etc.

What if I don’t have a roommate?
Many apartment complexes have amazing roommate matching systems and will set you up with a roommate before move-in. This process typically consists of a brief survey to match you and your potential roommate based on your major, hobbies, habits and more.

Are there any leases shorter than 1 year?
Depending on the market and school you’re in, you’ll likely find very few student housing apartments that offer leases shorter than a year. You’re welcomed to discuss with the property manager to see what options are available as a few may be flexible depending on their occupancy rate, or reach out to your personal concierge beforehand for the best options available.

Are there buses to get to and from campus?
Most major universities listed offer free shuttles to their students for getting around campus and the most popular spots around town. Be sure to check in on your school’s shuttle website to check route details and see if the bus meets at your complex.

How do you find out about the surrounding neighborhood/community?
The best resource can actually be found through LoftSmart! Once on
their site, go to your school’s page on the site and view our helpful neighborhood guides that will tell you all about the neighborhood and its perks or downsides.
