Need a job? Tips on finding a job and jobs you have not considered!
A new semester begins and with it your tuition, fees, and books will quickly empty your bank account. There is no need to panic! There are many ways for an international student in the US to find jobs and there are a lot of jobs that you may not have considered before. With your tight budget, it’s important to consider making some extra money to pay your bills while you study- if your visa allows you to. Here are some tips on where to start.
If you’re studying in the US while on an F1 visa then you’re able to work on-campus during your time in the US. Many universities and colleges put together events at the beginning of the year to help students get involved on campus. Since the majority of college students look for a job while they study, different faculties also come together to offer on-campus jobs. Some of these events are separated into departments within the university, but our advice: always attend campus events. This is the best way to get your name and face out there and meet possible employers on campus. You also have the opportunity to meet professors and staff that you could potentially work with later on. Along with attending campus events to hear about jobs, here are a few job suggestions that you will want to investigate on your own:
- Working at the Student Union: Almost every university and college in the US has a student union. This is a centralized building with restaurants, galleries, entertainment, and more. Jobs at the Student Union are great for college students as they’re typically fun and flexible. For example, I had friends in college who worked at the bowling alley on campus. They always had a great time and flexible hours since it was only opened in the evenings from Wednesday to Sunday. Another job option at the Student Union to consider is an organizer of events. This could include setting up rooms for specific events, hanging fliers or posting post-event pictures. Some of the restaurants on campus also prefer to hire students on-campus and will even work with their class schedules.
- Do you like teaching?: When I was in college, I really enjoyed learning languages. Through a friend, I got connected with the athletic department and became a french tutor for student athletes. My friend was also a physics tutor for the engineer department. Play to your strengths! If you enjoy a specific subject that you are very good at, look into becoming a tutor for other students. You will help others understand a subject better while making extra money and keeping all the important topics fresh in your mind.
- Go team!: Sports are a huge part of the college culture in the US. Many games will be hosted at your college or university and this brings a big, hungry and thirsty crowd of spectators to campus. Consider working for the athletic department as part of the operations or parking staff. You will most likely be taking entry tickets, serving refreshments, and watching games for free!
- Books and more books: Do you like to work indoors, in a quiet place, where you might be able to get your own homework done? The school’s library will be a great place to work! Whether that’s helping students find books or troubleshooting the technology offered by your school, the library is a cozy and ideal workplace for students.
- Work where you live: Almost every residence hall has a staffed front desk where individuals who live in the hall can visit with a concern or question. Many residence halls have a 24/7 front desk which means there are multiple hours of the day that need to be filled and that can fit into your schedule. The best part of working in your residence hall is you don’t need to travel far to get to work!
Off Campus
Working off campus can be a bit more difficult, however, it is not impossible! As an international student, you have different options such as OPT, CPT, or working for an International Organization Employment. Once you are approved to work off campus, consider the following:
- Legal paperwork: To study off campus, you will need to be approved by the USCIS. Even after you are approved, you will need to follow strict rules and regulations. Make sure you start early and don’t give up! The process may seem daunting but you will be able to obtain great opportunities with this authorization.
- What are you studying?: Find an industry where you can expand on your skills. If you are studying animal science, find places like veterinary clinics to work. If you are studying engineering, look for firms that offer internships, co-ops or part-time employment. Your on campus career center can help you in the search for off campus jobs
- Severe Economic Hardship: Life happens and sometimes, things are unavoidable. If you suddenly had an accident or fell ill, medical bills can be astronomical. While we always recommend having a health insurance for these instances, you might be needing an extra bit of income to complete next month’s bills. You might qualify for additional assistance.
Looking for a job in a foreign country may seem like an impossible task. However, in the US, there are many opportunities for everyone to be involved and get ahead in their career. If you need a job to finance your studies, rest assure your school will give you the tools to find a great workplace.

The Top Reasons Why You Should Earn Your Degree in Pennsylvania
From sea to shining sea the United States of America is the land of freedom, opportunity and most importantly higher education. Deciding where to study isn’t easy since America has 50 individual states each with tons of different colleges and their own unique cultures. One of the most historic places and embodies the true spirit of American culture is the state of Pennsylvania.
Each year more than 48,000 international students come to Pennsylvania to live and study. For some students it’s the educational value, the big cities, and natural wonders that make them want to study here. For others it’s just the food and the friendly people that makes so many people from around the world want to come here. Below are some of the reasons why you should consider studying in Pennsylvania.
A Rich History
Pennsylvania’s largest city, Philadelphia, is the city that literally started it all! This is the city where America fought for its freedom during the American Revolution and signed the Declaration of Independence.
If you’re interest is in history then you should come study at one of the oldest cities in America. The University of Pennsylvania is one of the oldest universities in America, founded by Benjamin Franklin (The man on the $100 bill) all the way back in 1740.
Since Philadelphia is over 300 years old it’s rich in historic landmarks. The famous “Liberty Bell” and countless other landmarks make appearances in the hit movies, like National Treasure, starring Nicolas Cage!
City Life
Pennsylvania is home to not just one but to two major cities! Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are both major U.S. cities that are culturally rich and make for ideal locations to study in.
In Philadelphia something is always going on! With tons of festivals for music, films and food throughout the year, you’ll always have plans over the weekend. Philadelphia also hosts the highly popular “Made for America” music festival showcases big names such as Beyonce and The Weeknd in past years.
Pittsburgh may not be as large as Philadelphia but it has some undeniable perks. It’s constantly named one of the most affordable cities in the US to live in with rent averaging as little as $800 for a one bedroom compared to $2900 in NYC . Pittsburgh is also home to a few well known national sports teams the NFL team the Steelers and the NHL team the Penguins.
However, if city life isn’t for you there are other options for studying in Pennsylvania. Wilson College is a small liberal arts college located in the picturesque town of Chambersburg. Since Wilson only has around 1000 students it’s easy to make new friends and to keep up with old ones on campus.
The Great Outdoors
If you’re a nature lover, Pennsylvania is home to 120 state parks and 18 national parks. Natural wonders such as the Pine Creek Gorge aka the “Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania”. Enjoy a sunset hike on the shores of Lake Erie or go boating down the Susquehanna River, the longest river on the east of the US!
A beautiful park to see stars is Cherry Springs State Park, one of the best places to see the Milky Way Galaxy. Cherry Springs offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities ranging from mountain biking, hiking and rustic camping. In the winter time you can go ice skating, snowboarding or just build a snowman with your friends.
The Food
Pennsylvania is home to some of the most iconic food in the country. You haven’t lived till you’ve tried a “Philly cheesesteak”. This delicious sandwich consists of thinly sliced rib eye beef and melted cheese which is an iconic Philly staple since the 1930s.
The two best spots in city to try one is at Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks. These two restaurants constantly compete for best cheesesteak in all of Philly! Make the judgement for yourself on who is really king of the cheesesteak.
Pennsylvania is a melting pot of culture with multiple food options to try from all over the world. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have an up and coming food scene with plenty of options.
Attractions
Do you know that the American chocolate mecca, The Hershey Company, is headquartered in Hershey, Pennsylvania? The Hershey headquarters is anything but typical…it’s a fully functioning theme park called “Hersheypark”. With three parks included in your admission price. You can ride roller coasters, tube through the lazy river at “The Boardwalk at Hersheypark”, and wander through “ZooAmerica’s” 11-acre zoo with more than 200 animals. Of course there is also the chocolate!

Is Studying Online the Right Choice For You?
In today’s world students are choosing to study online more than ever. With this growing trend to study from home how do you know if it’s the right choice for you?
For answers we have created a Study Online section to help you make the right decision! Our Study Online section will show you things to consider before studying online, how to choose an online program, what you can expect from an online program and how to apply to an online school.
Things to consider?
There is a lot of value for students that choose to study online but there are also some drawbacks. Some of the advantages of studying online are:
- Saving money! Tuition for online schools tend to cost less than traditional on-campus schools. You will also be saving money on room, board and commuting cost because you’ll be studying from home.
- More time! While there are due-dates, for the most part you decide when to study.
Although saving time and money are important to all of us, there are also a few disadvantages such as missing out on a traditional US college experience and meeting new friends.
You also have to consider if you have the technology and equipment available to study online. If you have an older computer you may have trouble completing your courses, or if your major requires you to be in a lab there may not be online courses available for you.
It’s a big step deciding to choose an online school, here is a complete list of all the things you should consider before deciding if it is right for you.
How to choose?
There are a lot of different types of online programs out there, and it can be a bit overwhelming to know where to start. In our Study Online Section we’ve listed numerous steps and things to consider while you search for an online school that’s right for you.
One of the most important steps is making sure that you choose a quality program. Be mindful that some online programs that you find might be scams. Look into when the online school started, their relationships within the educational community, and check with employers and alumni to see if the online program meets expectations. Also, you should always make sure that the school is accredited. An accreditation acts as a seal of approval that the school is legitimate and respected. Find out how to navigate your way to choosing an online program here(link).
What to expect?
Studying online is a very different experience than studying at a traditional on-campus school. One of the biggest changes is that you will not be learning in a classroom setting but rather your home or an area with internet connection. Although the environment and structure are quite different you can still expect weekly assignments, exams and student interaction along with instructions from your professor. From the start of class your professor will send you a class syllabus that will explain expectations and instructions on how you can navigate through your online class. Through student forums and group projects you’ll still have access to connect with other students in your class who are studying from around the world! Like any class you can expect that you will have to put in time and effort to receive credit.
Here is a list of what you can expect from an online program.
Start Applying
Now that you know you want to enroll in an online school it’s time to start applying. Luckily, applying for an online school is pretty similar to applying to a traditional school. It actually might be simpler because you will not have to worry about applying for a student visa. Keep in mind that some online programs might want to do a video chat interview, so be prepared and practice with a friend before your interview. During the interview you may be asked questions such as how do you plan on balancing schoolwork with your daily responsibilities or why do want to study online?
There are a lot of things to consider and research if you’re thinking about enrolling in an online program! We hope that with our new Study Online section you have a better idea if this is the right choice for you!
