Summer Travels on an International Student Budget
May is just around the corner and summer will start before you know it! Whether you’re graduating and already have a job lined up for the summer, or are still trying to figure out what to do during your summer break- if you are going to do any sort of traveling this summer, there are many ways to stick to a budget and make every dollar count. Part of the studying abroad experience includes sightseeing, traveling, exploring, and engaging in activities that you normally would not be able to in your home country. Here are some tips on how to save money on the way to these places:
Oh the places you’ll go!
The United States provides a unique opportunity for many travelers as it is one of the biggest countries in the world. This means that you have a lot of choices when it comes to where you want to spend your vacations. Due to its vastness, the contiguous US can be divided into six regions: The East coast, West coast, Midwest, Rocky Mountains, South, and Northeast. Each of its regions has their own customs and folklore. Since this country is so big, decide where you want to go first. Many people take road trips and visit multiple states in one weekend.
Holidays to enjoy in the United States happening during the summer:
- Memorial Day – May 29, 2017
- Remember the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces
- Independence Day – July 4, 2017
- U.S. states declared their independence from England in 1776.
- Labor Day – September 4, 2017
- Honor the contributions and efforts of hard workers throughout the country.
Need a room?
Because the United States is host to many people from around the world, you are bound to find a hotel or hostel within your budget in almost every town or city. However, Trivago checks multiple hotel websites for you and will give you the best deal. If you are looking for something more homey, check out AirBnB. People around the country use this app to rent out their homes for vacations or short term stays. However, you can also find experiences or activities guided by locals! It is one of the best ways to get to really know the place where you are traveling without the high prices of common tourist areas.
Escaping the city
If you are a person that enjoys outdoor activities, you will have many choices to explore nature in the US. Generally, you can find a national park or reserve within an hour or two from where you live. The National Park Service in the United States provides a list of all the places you can visit during your vacations. You can usually stay in a cabin or a tent in many of these parks and partake in activities like fishing, hunting, hiking, kayaking and biking. However, you will want to check the activity with the National Park Service before partaking to ensure you won’t be charged a fee. If you prefer more organized summer outdoor activities, Camp No Counselors is designed for young adults and offers activities like zip lining, wakeboarding, and beach volleyball.
Catch Me Flying, How About That?
If you want to avoid the long road trips inside a tiny car, flying is always an option. Sometimes this may be a better choice than road trips. But beware, during the summer holidays flights tend to be expensive since it’s a peak time for tourism. StudentUniverse is a company that offers good prices on flights. Some things to keep in mind when you are trying to book a flight:
- Shop early! Usually, 6 weeks before your travel date is when airplane tickets are the cheapest.
- Shop on Tuesday nights – You will notice that this are the cheapest days to find flights.
- Fly during the week – It is usually cheaper to leave on a weekday, though this isn’t always the case.
- Lose the extra luggage – Just take what you need. Airlines like Spirit, Allegiant, and Frontier have very cheap tickets but you will pay extra for any luggage you take.
Before you leave to your home country, make sure you take some time to explore the United States. You will find that this country offers many opportunities for those bold enough to take a chance.

How to Build Good Credit in the US as an International Student
As an international student inside the US, it’s wise to know your credit score and start building your credit now.
What is a credit score? Your credit score essentially reflects how much of a financial risk you would be if you were loaned money. Building a good credit score means it will be possible (and easier) to do things like take out a loan, rent or buy a home, and get good rates on auto or home insurance.
You may be wondering how your credit score determined. Credit is determined by five factors:
- Payment History (35%) – Lenders want to know if you’ve paid past credit amounts on time.
- Amounts Owed (30%) – This is the amount you owe on all forms of credit. Is your credit card staying maxed out, or are you paying it off in a reasonable time frame?
- Length of Credit History (15%) – Your credit score also factors in the amount of time you have been building credit. The sooner you start building credit, the better your credit will be!
- Credit Mix (10%) – The mix of credit cards, retail accounts and loans is a small factor in your credit score. It is good to have multiple credit cards but better to just have a couple and be paying them off on time.
- New Credit (10%) – By opening multiple lines of credit in a short amount of time you will be considered a greater risk, it is smart to open new lines of credit slowly over time to keep building your credit.
How do you build good credit? The best way to start building credit is by having a credit card. Many companies make it difficult to open a credit card as an international student, especially if you don’t have credit history or a social security number. However, SelfScore offers a MasterCard just for international students which means you don’t need a social security number to open an account.
If you are at least 18 years of age, have been accepted to study at an accredited US college or university, and have a valid F1, J1 or M1 visa you are eligible to apply for your own credit card through SelfScore!
The SelfScore MasterCard offers premium benefits including:
- $0 annual fee
- No fees on foreign transactions
- 1% cashback on all purchases
- 0% APR for the first six months
- Usage anywhere in the world where MasterCard is accepted
Explore the option of opening a credit card to help build your credit, but keep in mind that having a credit card comes with great responsibility. It can be easy to charge things on a whim, but you must be mindful to pay off your purchases in a timely manner. Learn more about building credit as an international student.

Don’t Forget to File Your Tax Return
April 18th is approaching fast, don’t forget to file your tax return! If you are an international student studying in the United States you must file your tax return on or before April 18th!
Every international student and their dependents (including spouses and children) are required to file their taxes if they were living in the US during the previous calendar year. If you began your studies in the US this year then you do not need to file a tax return.
Why should you file your taxes? Not filing can impact if you want to come back to the US.
It will also fulfill your visa obligation and you may even receive money back from the federal government!
How can you file your taxes?
Filing your taxes can seem stressful and difficult, but it doesn’t have to be. If you have a complicated tax situation, a great way to file your taxes for a small fee is by using a tax preparation service. Our partner Sprintax is a tax preparation service designed just for international students, scholars, teachers and researchers who are residing in the US. Sprintax walks you through step-by-step to file your tax return without all the stress. Your time is valuable and by using a tax preparation service you’ll be able to focus your time on what is important to you.
If you are looking to file your tax return on your own you can do so for free!
Most international students are considered non-residents aliens for tax purposes. All international students will need to file Form 8843. If you have received income within the last year then you will need to file Form 8843 and probably Form 1040NR-EZ.
Once you have the correct form here are some useful steps to walk you through the tax return process:
Determine your residence status.
- Most international students are considered nonresident aliens for tax purposes.
Did you have any income from US sources in the previous calendar year?
- If you had a source of US income last year it probably came from scholarships, wages through employment and/or bank interest.
Figure out which forms you need to fill out and what information you’ll need.
- It is easy to get confused on which form or forms are the right ones for you. If you are unsure about which form you need to fill out then check out our ‘International Student Tax FAQs’ section to help you decide.
Double check your documents to make sure they are correct.
- It never hurts to look over your math to see that everything is correct on the forms you have previously filled out.
Be sure to mail your forms to the proper addresses.
- Non US residents are not allowed to file electronically. You must mail your hard copy documents to the correct address. You can find a list of addresses and deadlines here at our ‘Student Tax Return’ section.
Always keep a copy of all of your documents!
- It is recommended that you keep a copy of your tax documents.
Congratulations! If you followed these steps then you should have a better grasp on how to file your tax return. Are you still a bit unsure if your taxes have been completed properly? Our partner Sprintax has assisted students from over 180 different countries in filing their tax returns.

Still Searching to Find the Perfect College?
Still searching to find the perfect college to attend? Finding a great school that’s just perfect for you is difficult, but sometimes the school that we picture for ourselves isn’t always what we need. In my experience, I dreamed of going to a large, traditional, public school. The school I choose was a small liberal arts college located on a nature reserve. It was not your typical college experience, but it was exactly what I needed! I was on a campus that offered amazing opportunities like small class sizes, which enabled me to personally know all of my teachers and classmates, and result in a very successful outcome after graduation.
Like my college, Westminster College is also a small liberal arts school. It was founded in 1852 in New Wilmington, PA and could be the school you’ve been searching for! In 2017, Westminster College is one of the best liberal colleges because of their small class sizes, and their very high graduation rate (with more than 78% of the their students graduating on time).
Students at Westminster College love their school and wouldn’t recommend going anywhere else. At Westminster students enjoying living on campus where they’ve made new friendships that last wherever they go! They also have the opportunity to study some pretty amazing programs.
Environmental Science
The Environmental Science program at Westminster is huge. Westminster College dedicates 110 acres to their Outdoor Laboratory for their environmental science students to conduct research on lakes, woods and undisturbed lands. Their students find solutions for environmental issues and enter a growing field. On campus their students use their scientific knowledge to protect water, find alternative energy solutions, work in air quality, and research land use. Students also have the chance to design and build environmentally sustainable homes in their Tiny House Project.
Physical Therapy
Have you ever imagine yourself helping people in clinics, hospitals or a private office? At Westminster College students in their Physical Therapy program learn to help clients through massage, heat treatment, and prescribed exercise. Qualifying students can participate in a 3-3 articulation program where they spend three years studying at Westminster, followed by three years at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh to earn both the Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees in six, rather than the traditional seven years.
Create Your Own Major
That’s right, students at Westminster College can choose what path they want by creating their own major! Imagine yourself as a chemical ecologist, a science writer, a music executive, a daycare owner, or a pharmaceutical salesperson. You can accomplish your personal goals in a individual interdisciplinary degree. How it works is students identify a core of coursework in one program of study or major and then add coursework from other disciplines to create an educational experience unique to them. This is a great option if you’re someone who hasn’t settled on one career path.
Whatever degree path you choose at Westminster College you will succeed because of their hands-on class experience, small class sizes and unique opportunities to learn more. Once a student at Westminster you’ll agree that this is exactly where you need to be!
