Mind what you read and what you hear, don’t be fooled this April Fools’ Day!
If you are studying in the US you may think April 1st is just another day, however, April 1st is the day of fools, better known as April Fools’ Day.
What is April Fools’ Day? This holiday is celebrated worldwide, including in the US, by pranking your family, friends or co-workers by playing light hearted jokes on them, followed by saying “April Fools!” after the joke is complete.
You should always be careful to not believe everything you read, especially on April 1st! Many companies worldwide announce (as a joke) that they’re going to release unbelievable products, and many news outlets cover these ridiculous, but almost believable stories, to go along with the joke.
On April Fool’s Day you can expect to hear some outrageous stories. To get an idea of some stories you may hear, here are some of the best April Fools’ jokes in modern history:
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Well it is a bird but not one you would see up in the sky! On April 1, 2008 The BBC fooled the world by announcing they had captured footage of Adelie penguins… flying! At the time this video quickly became one of the most viewed videos on the internet.
The US and UK aren’t the only ones in on the fun! On April 1, 1962 Sweden’s SVT (Svergies Television) brought their technical expert, Kjell Stentson, onto the news to tell the audience if they put a nylon stocking over their TV screen, the mesh would make the TV screen appear to be in color! Thousands of Swedes were taken in and many still remember this prank.
Sometimes pranks can play off of each other. On April 1, 1996 the fast-food chain ‘Taco Bell’ took out a full-page ad in six different newspapers claiming to have purchased the Liberty Bell and were renaming it the ‘Taco Liberty Bell’. The joke gained momentum when the White House press secretary, Mike McCurry, was asked about the purchase. He responded that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold and was being renamed the ‘Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial’.
Those pranks are pretty great, but what is considered the best April Fools’ joke of all time?
The great Swiss spaghetti harvest is considered to be one of the best jokes. In 1957 the BBC news show ‘Panorama’ announced that Swiss farmers were enjoying a plentiful spaghetti crop. Footage of Swiss farm workers harvesting spaghetti off of trees made the story more convincing and fooled many viewers who even called in to learn how to grow their own spaghetti tree. BBC replied “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.” Even the director of BBC tried to find out how to grow his own spaghetti tree!
No matter how real something may seem on April Fool’s Day, the key is to mind what you read and what you hear, so that you won’t be made a fool of!

How to Use the InternationalStudent.com School Search Tool
Did you know that InternationalStudent.com has a school search tool to help you find a college or university that will meet specific criteria? Best of all, it’s a free and quick service. Here are some quick steps on how to use the InternationalStudent.com school search tool.
First, you need to visit our school search page. From there you can filter schools in just three steps, here’s the breakdown:
- Field of Study: Select from a drop-down list of career programs which one you want to pursue. This will filter your search results to only show schools that offer the program you’re interested in. If you’re not sure which program you want to pursue, you can skip this step.
- School Location: Do you dream of studying in New York, or perhaps in California? Choose that state here! If you’re flexible on the location then you can also skip this step and receive school suggestions from throughout the US.
- Degree Level: What degree level will you be pursuing? Not every school offers a degree program for each level. Make sure you select this option so you can view results that best match what you need.
After you’ve selected the information you want, you can click “Search Now.” This will provide you with each school in the US that meets the specific criteria you listed. If you see a college or university on the list that you want more information on, then click that school. You will then be taken to their profile page where you can learn details including tuition, admission requirements, student and faculty stats, available programs, photos of the school, etc. You can even submit your contact information to request more information directly from that school- to do this you simply need to complete the form on the page that says “Request More Information.”

Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder…Or Does It?
Are you in a committed relationship and thinking about studying abroad? Is it possible to be in a long distance relationship while apart and located across the world? They say distance makes the heart grow fonder…or does it?
One of the greatest opportunities you can have in college is studying abroad. Studying abroad is a life changing adventure full of excitement and challenges. When living among a new culture you’re going to want to experience everything your new home away from home has to offer. From food to the sights, different people and maybe even a new romance.
What about if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend back home? Is long distance really worth it? Here are five tips to consider if you are deciding to do long distance when studying abroad:
1) Define Your Relationship
Once you have decided that you are studying abroad, it’s never too early to sit down with your partner to figure out if you should stay together. Do you see yourself together a year from now? Then a few months physically apart is probably doable.
Be realistic with the expectations you have for each other while you’re gone, you both are the best judges on if a long distance relationship is reasonable. If one of you doesn’t see a future together long term then it may be better to be single on both ends.
2) Balanced Communication Is Key
Talking regularly is important when being apart but finding a balance is the most important factor. You can’t just constantly be on your phone or laptop messaging back and forth on a tiny little screen when there is a whole country waiting to be explored!
Get out and explore, make new friends and try new things! If your partner cares about you they will understand and want you to explore. They’ll also more than likely want you to tell them all about it when you both have the time.
3) Visit Them
Chances are if you’re both in college then you will have the time to make the trip. If you have the time and the money, then you should definitely take advantage of visiting your loved one in another country.
It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to see another country with someone you really care about and seeing it for the first time through their eyes.
4) Utilize Technology
Technology will become your best friend when trying to make long distance work. Schedule Skype dates, share those photos on social media or give your partner a call on WhatsApp!
With so many outlets for communication and sharing you can feel like you’re only kilometers apart instead of oceans away.
5) Be Selfish
This experience is for you, at the end of the day do what makes you happy. Don’t feel like you can’t do things because you have someone waiting for you back home. If you trust each other then don’t feel bad about staying out late having your own adventures.
It’s your life and you only get one…don’t live with “I could have…” live with “I did that…”.

What can you do with a degree in Creativity & Marketing?
The world in which you will have to operate in your future business life is much more volatile, uncertain and complex. Yesterday’s consumer purchased from a limited set of offerings, and the communication was one-way, under complete control of marketing and advertising agencies. Today, individual consumers are much more educated, sceptical and fast-checker. They can start with an idea, a need, or an inspiration and browse online to find what they want, and, if they can’t find it, create it themselves by working with companies that provide this capability.
Firms’ profits, image and reputation are under pressure! In a CEO study commissioned by IBM, “More than two in five CEOs now expect their next competitive threat to come from organizations outside their industries. These new competitors aren’t just set to steal market share. They are upsetting whole industries; reinventing how value is created; and redefining what constitutes value.” Just think about TESLA for cars or Uber for Taxi and you can easily understand what is happening!
So questions you can ask yourself are: Do I understand these changes? Am I ready to cope with these changes? Am I skilled for these changes? Do I have the resources and technics for becoming a change leader in this exciting world?
As Generation Y or Z, turbulence, volatility and technology are parts of your DNA but it is not a sufficient condition for creating value from it. Ultimately, as future Marketing executives, your primary role will be to shape, build and maintain revenue streams. Growing top-line revenues will be your main objective and it has to be done through brand experiences, fun and bringing magic to customers.
Do we know few magic recipes that you can easily apply in your job for achieving this goal? Unfortunately not! There is however a strong consensus that Creativity and more specifically creative leadership could unlock profitable growth. But what is really creativity?
Creativity is not about creating balloons, using funky fonts or photoshopping pictures. Creativity is characterized by the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and to generate solutions. Creativity involves two processes: thinking, then producing. If you have ideas, but don’t act on them, you are imaginative but not creative.
True marketing leaders embrace uncertainty and complexity as creative catalysts that invite and, in fact, demand innovation. Creative leaders should view constraints at every level as exciting challenges that release–not restrict–creative responses. Additionally, creative leadership recognizes the risk in trying new things and doesn’t fear failure.
Solvay Brussels School’s Advanced Master in Creativity & Marketing helps you to unlock your creative leadership in Marketing and will bring it to a highly practical level! How?
- You will understand creative processes and apply it in a number of marketing situations (in class, but also during a field project in organisations like L’ Oréal, communication agencies or innovative startups).
- You will sit Google certifications during the class with a course on SEO/SEA and Analytics.
- You will be able to become a content marketeer during the year! At the end of each course, you will have to produce a social post (blog, video, infographics …) that will be published on our social channels.
- You will be able to participate in different activities with key players (visit agencies, participating in a pitches competition, job speed-dating…) as we have strong connections with the marketing industry (Marketing agencies and brands).
- You will create and design innovative and attractive concepts that are adapted to new market conditions, consumers’ new expectations and usages.
- You will learn and use new marketing skills suited to new business dynamics: Strategic planning, Behavioural marketing and Data insights.
So the question is again for you: Are you ready to boost your creative leadership? If you don’t know, think about it! If you feel it, call us! If you are sure, join us!

Learn how Purchasing and Supply Chain Management MSc students put their skills into practice
My name is Ashar, I’m 22 years old and I was born and raised in Saudi Arabia. I made the decision to move to London to continue my higher education. I just completed my Masters in Purchasing and Supply Chain Management here at Westminster Business School, University of Westminster.
Ashar Raffiuddin
I have always enjoyed looking into profitability for a business and how to add value.
While studying for my Masters, I have done an internship with UK’s Most Innovative award-winning, start-up company and crowd-funded Business of the Year called Lovespace, which is UK’s first storage by the box service. This assisted me in learning and developing some of the essential skills required to manage a successful business. Although I found the internship myself, the Business Experience Team (BET) at Westminster Business School really helped guide me with improving my CV and interview preparation.
What is your business and what inspired you to start it?
My business is called The Velocity watches. I have a big love for watches and I see a lot of people wearing watches with the usual Roman numerals or no numbers.
I wanted to buy myself a watch that had Arabic numbers with simplicity and good quality but I couldn’t find one so I thought why not make my own?
I have always wanted to start up my own business but I knew it had to be unique. With the knowledge that people love travelling to Arabic speaking countries like Dubai and Arabic being one of the oldest languages in the world I thought it would be a unique concept with a large potential market. I also loved the idea that it would allow people from outside of Arab culture to embrace it more.
Most watches are expensive and this is one thing I didn’t want my watches to be. The affordability aspect was an important part for me and this is why the straps are interchangeable and can be done by yourself without having to go to the shop or it being a complicated process.
My target audience are people who enjoy and embrace different cultures. Funnily enough, my first customer was an English woman who was around 45 years old and was tattooed all over. It kind of shocked me at first that she saw it as something different and unique but at the same something she would wear.
How has your degree helped you launch your business?
My time here has been an amazing experience. The whole reason why I chose Purchasing and Supply Chain Management MSc is because it is the bloodline of any business and includes how you manufacture your product and much more. I learned a lot of things such as the core of business, logistics operations and how to utilise and optimise physical modes of transport and shipping. Before starting my degree I assumed that the most cost effective transport methods was shipping but now that London and China have the first railway link it will increase London’s economic power and may change the way goods are transported by freight trains.
This degree has assisted me to catch up in areas that I was lacking knowledge in. For example, I was generally poor in finance but as part of this Masters degree, I pushed myself to learn everything needed and can honestly say that I’ve now improved. My first module here, “Financial Analysis for Managers” further developed my business knowledge and taught me about how to focus on the key financial concepts of running a business. Another module that was useful was the law module (“International Aspects of Business Law”) as it assisted me in learning more about my business such as trade laws when shipping from China to London.
The best module however, was “Purchasing Management” as I can apply its concepts every day. I feel that the whole concept will help me get into Selfridges who I have a meeting with soon.
The All Black Falco
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced in starting up your business?
As my brother is established in the UK, he helped me set up the business and offered some guidance but after a while, I had to manage it all alone: the business itself, running the website and Instagram, studying and working too. So the biggest challenge was managing my time.
The main thing about juggling your time is making sure you divide up your time in the best way that suits you. Another thing is to remember to prioritise, for example, this last month I had to focus on my dissertation so my business had to take a back seat and sometimes this is necessary. Also if you are enjoying what you do that makes it much easier!
Do you have any tips for students who are thinking of starting their own business?
- The best thing for anyone not just business people is to grow your network.
- If you have a good feeling about something go for it don’t worry about what people say.
- Get a mentor! Anyone who inspires you could be a mentor. Unfortunately I didn’t have one, but I regretted not asking my professor Dr Hussian. At the end of the module I told him about my business (and he said I should have told him earlier) and in just 15 minutes he gave me such valuable advice.
- Read! I never used to enjoy reading but I learned to like it. I started with smaller novels in genres I enjoy such as science-fiction then I started to read bigger books that were more business focused. So now on the train instead of wasting time on my phone, I read my book. If you don’t like books, watch positive, inspiring YouTube videos.

Your Spring Break on a Budget
It’s almost time for your Spring break! By now you’re well into your Spring semester and need a break from being in the library all day. Spring break is your time to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather, but sometimes the cost of going on a trip can feel more like a big headache.
Some of my best memories from college are from spring break! The long road trips, cramming into a hotel room with too many friends, and eating sandwiches for every meal- I wouldn’t change a thing! I learned how to have fun but travel on a very tight budget, and you can too! Here are my Spring break on a budget tips:
The more the merrier
Whenever I traveled during Spring break it would always be with a large group of friends. The more people in the group, the cheaper the trip. This really helped us all save money on gas and accommodations. With a large group, my friends and I were able to travel further away and rent a bigger place to stay because of the money we saved by splitting the cost.
Be flexible with flying
When it comes to picking flights it can be a little tricky to save money. By shopping around through different airlines and even looking at different airports I saved a lot of money. I used StudentUniverse to shop for flights because they gave me a great student discounted rate for flying. Airports that were in nearby cities were sometimes more affordable to fly out of than using the closest airport. I also chose flights that had long connections instead of choosing a direct flight. One time I found an inconvenient flight but booked it because it was so cheap, what a rush!
Homey hostels
While hostels in the US are not popular like in other parts of the world, there are many hostels in cities across the US, and they can be surprisingly nice to stay in. A bunk in the US can cost you $20 to $50 a night compared to a hotel room that can cost you hundreds of dollars! If all you need is a bed for your trip you should consider to stay in a hostel.
Snacks and sandwiches
For me, the best part about traveling are the different foods to try, but eating out is an easy way to drain your wallet! Traveling makes me hungry, so I always have snacks on me like crackers or fruit to keep me energized. I usually go to the grocery store when I’ve reached my destination and buy food that I know will fill me up. I save money because I am not eating out for every meal but instead eating my snacks and sandwiches!
Staycation
The best way to save money during Spring break is to stay on-campus or at home. Staycation is a vacation spent at home and involves fun local activities. A staycation is a great way to enjoy your Spring break on a budget! You can relax around the house, watch movies, read books that you’ve been putting off, explore your city or visit local attractions. Sometimes the best things are at home and you will save a lot of money doing so.
Whatever trip you plan during your spring break you can still have fun and save a few bucks here and there.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the US as an International Student
Each year in March the Chicago River in Chicago, Illinois runs green between Columbus and Wacker Drive. Nearly 400,000 people enjoy the brightly colored river while listening to bagpipes play in the near distance. What event is so large that it can turn a river green? St. Patrick’s Day! St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday that originated in honor of the patron Saint of Ireland: St. Patrick, but it’s a holiday that many countries around the world, including the US, enjoy celebrating today. Although not every city in the US has a St. Patrick’s Day celebration quite like Chicago, every city will have something for you to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the US as an international student.
St. Patrick’s Day is a day to enjoy time with friends, good drinks and delicious dishes like corned beef and cabbage. Although this holiday was originally celebrated by worshiping and spending time with family, today this holiday is celebrated primarily by spending time with friends and watching parades.
Here are a few ways that you’re able to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this year:
- Wear Green: Green has become the standard color to wear on St. Patrick’s Day and many will even pinch you if they see you’re not wearing it. The more green, the better!
- Shamrocks: Decorating with or wearing shamrocks (clovers) on St. Patrick’s Day is also a must. Whether it’s a shirt, socks, or a beaded necklace, find something with shamrocks to wear. Why shamrocks? Some say that shamrocks are associated with this holiday because Saint Patrick used shamrocks to explain the trinity. If you’re not into wearing shamrocks, find a patch of grass and start hunting for the real-deal!
- Feast on corned beef and cabbage: Corned beef and cabbage surprisingly started as a tradition by Irish-Americans. Corned beef was more readily available to those in the US who migrated from Ireland than the more traditional bacon joint, but had a similar texture. Today, this dish is a staple in the US on St. Patrick’s Day. Find a good recipe online to try and create the dish yourself, or seek out a local restaurant that can cook it for you.
- Find an Irish pub: When you find one, be prepared for a wait! Everyone in town will also be trying to find an Irish pub to enjoy Irish music and Irish drinks (like Guinness). If possible, try to go early but be prepared for a crowd.
- Attend a local event: As mentioned, many cities have organized events in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Visit your city’s website and see if there are any parades, concerts or likewise celebrations in town. If held by the city, typically these celebrations will be free and are a good way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the US as an international student.
- Travel to celebrate: Want to see the green river in Chicago this year? Book a trip! There are numerous large St. Patrick’s Day celebrations throughout the US, so jump on a plane and join in on the celebration. A few top places to visit include Chicago, Savannah and Boston.
St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17th, how do you plan on celebrating this year?
