Why Do You Love Your School? Tell Us Why Until Valentine’s Day!

With Valentine’s Day coming up we have one question for you…”Why do you love your school?”

Tell us why until Valentine’s Day! We want to hear from you about why you love your school! Up until Valentine’s Day on February 14th we want to hear on our Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus pages why you love your school! Some of the top responses will be featured in a blog post on Valentine’s Day so be sure to post or comment and be true to your school!

You may be wondering where did our modern Valentine’s Day come from? and how popular could it be?

Valentine’s Day is a celebration of happiness and love whether it be for spouses, or friends and family. The Valentine’s Day we know and love today, got its roots from 19th century England where the exchanging of handwritten cards decorated with real lace and ribbons were mailed all over the country to loved ones near and far. This practice soon followed over to the U.S. with the invention of paper lace and a growing popularity for the holiday.

Times have changed though and Valentine’s Day has gone from somewhere between 400,000 cards a year being sent in the 1850s to millions of cards, gifts, candies, jewelry and other gifts being sent around the globe! It is now a multi billion dollar industry and growing in countries all around the world.

Many countries have adapted their own unique way of celebrating Valentine’s Day and are adapting it to become a part of a changing globalized culture. No matter how you celebrate, make sure you share with us what college or university you love!

Be sure to use the #ISloveyourschool when creating your post!

What a 1-year specialised course brings to your job search

What if an additional year of more specialised studies were to help you attract the attention of recruiters and secure exactly the first job you are looking for?

Congratulations! You have just passed your last exam, submitted your final thesis and are on the verge of receiving your Master’s degree! You should be rightly proud of what you have achieved, which is the end result of a concerted effort that will open up new horizons, including your first job.

However, things are not always quite this simple. In truth, very few graduates take the professional direction which they had in mind after their studies…

3 Options When You Haven’t Landed Your Dream Job

  1. The most common approach is to start job hunting, often by accepting one or several internships in the hope of finding a first position that matches your criteria and aspirations. Finding a first job can often be a real struggle with a genuine chance of disappointment. However, you won’t find if you don’t start looking!
  2. An alternative approach is to realise a personal project as part of the transition from studies to working life, be it travelling around the world, a sporting or humanitarian initiative or setting up your own business. Momentum is key to successfully carrying out such ideas.
  3. The final case regards graduates who realise that the degree for which they worked so hard does not entirely match their expectations or indeed those of the companies where they would like to begin their career. They also realise that their educational background does not give them the competitive advantage they need in the eyes of the employers that interest them or do not yet feel suitably equipped to face the challenges of working life. Often they will hesitate between various possible directions for which they do not have the necessary grasp of the required skills. At every interview they will encounter candidates with a very similar CV to their own and the same story to tell. Without extra-academic experience or outstanding results it is difficult to get themselves noticed…

A postgraduate course: boost your eligibility on the job market

o address the specific requirements of the latter-most case, graduate schools and universities have devised postgraduate master programmes that come under various titles: postgraduate masters, specialised masters, advanced masters etc. These programmes enable you to obtain new knowledge that will help bolster your CV. They are also essential for graduates looking to change direction or broaden their options. Many such programmes are heavily geared towards the development of soft skills and will guide you towards a career plan that meets your expectations. This aspect is crucial if you consider that your initial Master’s degree has not prepared you sufficiently for the dynamics of the working world.

Solvay Brussels School of Economics & ManagementThe main objective of these postgraduate programmes is to increase your career prospects and enable you to choose from as well as be chosen by appealing recruiters.

The format has proven a resounding success! An increasing number of students are choosing to pursue an additional year of studies, with the subsequent path taken producing surprising and enriching results. In most cases, participants in the programmes find the right direction for them – and a genuinely motivating first job – at the end of the course.

4 key questions when choosing a Postgraduate Masters

  • Am I ready to commit to an additional year of studies?
  • Will the subjects taught strengthen my professional profile?
  • Will the teaching approach prepare me for the working world?
  • Will the programme really open doors to jobs that I am truly interested in?

If the prospect of a postgraduate course interests you, Solvay Brussels School of Economics & Management offers a range of 5 innovative Advanced Masters specialising in Innovation, Strategy, Financial Markets, Quantitative Finance and Creativity & Marketing. Find out more about each programme at http://am.solvay.edu/.

Ways to Socialize as a New International Student

The first day of school is always a mix of feelings. Excitement of the new things that are coming, nervousness that we fit in well, and determination to start classes on the right foot are just a few of them. As an international student, a new semester means a new opportunity to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. After all, that’s why you are traveling to another country. Developing a social life can be a challenge when you travel alone but thanks to technology, the distance between people is becoming shorter.

Nowadays, we have many tools and less excuses to join a new club or learn a new skill. As someone in a foreign land, it might be hard to find the right niche but this task can be very fun!

Student Union on Campus

Almost every college or university in the US is equipped with a centralized building called “the union.” There is where most events around campus will take place or will be announced since it’s a high traffic area. If you are looking for groups to join or things to do during your weekend, make sure you visit your on-campus student union. Some student unions will have bowling alleys, small movie theaters, and popular restaurants for your convenience. If you don’t have a car, the student zone makes it easy for you to find something to do and socialize!

We Have an App for That

When you begin your search for something that might interest you, technology is your best friend. Ninety-nine percent of the time there will be an app that connects you to nearby events, groups in the proximity, etc. For example, Meetup is a great app for your mobile phone where anyone can create an interest group and be joined by people around your town. Another great app if you need a ride somewhere is Uber. Ubers are quickly replacing public transportation in certain areas. They arrive in just a short time and are easy on the budget. Uber drivers are regular people with a car that will give you a ride, sometimes, for a fraction of the cost of a taxi.

Like it, Tweet it, Snap it

The definition of communication has been greatly changed by social media. As you advance in your career, it is important to balance out that busy life and have a little fun! Facebook allows you to find events in your area and it will even remind you on the date its happening. Clubs around campus or groups in town will have a Twitter account that you can follow and see their activities. With Snapchat, you get a glimpse of the event before you head that way.

Ask your ‘mates

If you live on-campus, you probably come across hundreds of people every day. While some people are social butterflies, others may prefer to just hang around one or two friends. However, the residence halls are a great place to find out about activities or the nightlife during the weekend. It is also a good place to start since most people around you will be looking for something to do! Never feel like you are the only one trying to explore and try new things.

Now that you have a place to start, you should be able to change scenery. Go from your bed and Netflix to learning a new dance move and making lasting memories on this exciting time of your life. Make sure you take a chance out there and never fear going to an event or joining a group. The only thing you have to lose is the boredom of staying home.

Three Things That Can Delay Your College Admission

It’s a dream you’ve had for a while and you’re finally making it happen: you’re going to apply to study in the US. Although it might seem like it’s an easy enough process, there are many things that can get in the way of you receiving that acceptance letter. Here are three things that can delay your college admission that you need to be aware of before you apply.

  1. You Miss the Deadline
The application deadline isn’t a suggestion- it’s a strict deadline that you’ll need to follow. Not only will you be competing with hundreds of students (maybe even thousands, depending on the school), but not meeting the first deadline given to you by the school automatically sends a negative message to them. Make sure that you know the deadline, you take any applicable time difference into consideration, and you submit on time- if not early!
  2. You’re Not Prepared
Although you might feel more prepared than ever, if you don’t have every single item the school you’re applying to asks for, then you’re not. Whether you didn’t understand the application, you forgot to include something, or your dog ate your transcript, don’t assume they’ll make an exception for you when it comes to submitting a required information. Unfortunately, nine times out of ten they won’t grant you an extension- no matter what your excuse. Make a check list of everything you need to submit, mark items off as you go along, and check it twice.
  3. You Don’t Meet Minimum Requirements
Is your academic achievement a big determining factor in getting accepted? Although it’s not everything, it’s big. Institutions expect to see that you meet or exceed their minimum requirements. It’s important not to assume that since you have a good GPA they won’t mind if you completely bombed a required test. Although institutions often take each of the required item scores into account before eliminating students, it’s key to come as close as possible to what they require. If you take the SAT and your score isn’t quite what you hoped it would be: take it again! If your letters of reference aren’t as flattering as you know they could be: ask someone else! Not being accepted into the school of your choice the first time will mean you need to wait until the next round you’re able to apply (and re-pay the application fee). Although it might seem like a hassle to re-take a test or ask someone for a letter or reference before you apply, it’s a lot less hassle then having to re-apply.

You can watch to get more information on what to expect when completing a college application here. Do you have any tips when it comes to applying to a US college or university?
