New Year’s Resolutions and How to Achieve Them
It’s hard to believe, but 2017 is almost over! This means that the New Year is right around the corner. A popular tradition in the United States is creating your own New Year’s resolution. You may be asking yourself, what is that? A New Year’s resolution is where you make a promise to yourself to change something within that calendar year.
There are all kinds of New Year’s resolutions such as exercising more, eating better and saving money. Unsure of what your resolution should be? Here are some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions to consider:
1) Exercise More – Having a sound mind goes hand in hand with having a healthy body. If you want to work out more and get in shape for 2018 you can start by going on runs and doing some light work out routines. Chances are you have a gym on campus that you can utilize. Look into your campus fitness options, many university gyms have weekly classes. By participating in these classes you may even make some new friends or workout buddies!
2) Eating Healthier – The diet of most college students usually consists of pizza, pasta and a decent amount of fast food. There are tons of healthy alternatives, even on a college student budget. Many schools offer meal plans so you can eat a balanced meal without having to think too hard about it. Eating at your school’s cafe can also be a social experience to make more friends.
3) Find a Scholarship – Let’s face it, college is pretty expensive but it doesn’t have to be. Their are thousands of scholarship opportunities out there! Figuring out where to start looking can be the hardest part. However we do have an International Student & Study Abroad Scholarship Search that you can utilize for free on our site.
4) Quit Procrastinating – Get ahead of the game on school or just life in general by getting your work done in a timely fashion! Procrastination is a formidable foe that you can personally conquer by actively monitoring your time usage.
5) Take More Adventures – Going on an adventure doesn’t have to be a whole ordeal. It can be as simple as exploring your new town. If you have some free time take the day to explore a new place, maybe some nature trails or a museum. Every day can be an adventure if you choose to make it one!
6) Get Organized – Let’s face it, I am sure all of us can benefit from starting out 2018 nice and tidy. Organizing your life can mean a number of things from reevaluating personal relationships to just cleaning out your closet. One way to start this process is to make a list to prioritize what in your life needs organizing.
Well, you now have some ideas on how to make 2018 the best year yet! Sit down, think of what is the most important to you and decide on what your resolutions will be.

Ways to Celebrate in December as an International Student
December is almost upon us which means the holidays and end-of-year celebrations will keep you busy while on Winter break. In countries around the globe, December is a month of festivities, religious days, family time, and getting rest. If you are wondering how to best enjoy the month, here are some of the most popular holidays celebrated worldwide during the month of December and how to celebrate them.
Day of the Little Candles (Dia de las Velitas) – December 7th
To get December started, countries like Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador celebrate the Day of the Little Candles on December 7th. This is a catholic tradition celebrated on the eve of the Immaculate Conception (December 8th). It also marks the unofficial start of the Christmas festivities in these countries. Around 7pm on this day, people go out in the streets and place candles and paper lanterns on sidewalks, porches, balconies, and squares in honor of the Virgin Mary and the Immaculate Conception.
Hanukkah – December 12th to 20th
A very popular Jewish holiday celebrated in many parts of the world is Hanukkah. Hanukkah is celebrated in honor of the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem which in 165 BC was done by the Maccabees after its desecration by the Syrians. The holiday lasts eight days and nights and it is marked by the successive kindling of eight lights. This holiday is sometimes known as the “festival of lights”. It involves the nightly menorah (a eight branch gold candelabra) lighting, special prayers and fried foods.
Las Posadas – December 16th to 24th
In countries like Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala, December brings a week long holiday to spend with friends and family. Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration in which the story of the nativity of Jesus is reenacted. The word “posada” means “lodging” or “accommodation”. During the nine days, people will dress as the Virgin Mary and Joseph and a certain house (usually different ones every day of the nine day festivity) will be designated as the “inn” where Mary and Joseph go to seek shelter before she gives birth to baby Jesus. Once at the posada, the attendants will pray around the nativity scene and share time in family. This will also involve different foods and drinks typical of the region where the Posada takes place.
This is probably the biggest holiday celebrated worldwide during December. Christmas is celebrated in the morning of December 25th by opening the presents that Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas has left under the Christmas tree the night before. However, in some catholic countries, many people begin the festivities the previous day by finishing the Posadas or Novenas prayers at night. After, they will wait until midnight when baby Jesus is born. In these countries, baby Jesus is the one to bring the presents and kids will open their presents at midnight instead of the next day.
Day of the Innocents – December 28th
This holiday celebrated in many countries in Latin America is their version of April Fool’s day. In the catholic bible, it marks the day when King Herod orders to execute male babies in Bethlehem in order to kill baby Jesus. This day originally was celebrated to honor all of those innocent victims, however, there hasn’t been much evidence of this historical event taking place. Instead, the holiday has taken a turn and people treat it as a day when they can play pranks and tricks on each other.
New Year’s Eve and Day – December 31st and January 1st
To wrap up this great month, the festivities continue until the last day of the year. In most countries, New Year’s eve marks the beginning of another year and the end of the previous one. Cities like New York have their famous “Ball Drop” in Times Square. In Paris, the night sky lights up with the amazing display of fireworks around the Eiffel Tower. In countries like Colombia, people will burn a scarecrow toy that represents the year that ends.
There are definitely many holidays that you can celebrate around the world in December. If you ever want to travel to any of the countries we mentioned, a great place to find cheap flights for international students is StudentUniverse. While studying abroad, we always recommend joining in the festivities of the country you are and making incredible memories.

What is Behind The Orange Scarves All Over Oslo?

Taking Free Electives in College
College is a time when you can try new things and really discover who you are, in fact, a number of people don’t finish college with the same major that they started with. You’re exposed to a lot of new people, ways of thinking and a variety of classes.
When you study in the US as an international student, in each major you are required to take a certain amount of credit hours that are “free electives.” These courses are unrelated to your major and general education requirements but are necessary for graduation. Bachelor of Arts degrees usually have more free elective requirements than Bachelor of Science degrees. Most degrees do usually require at least a few free elective courses.
Taking free electives is a great opportunity to really get to know yourself. If you’re an Accounting major with an interest in history then you should take a history class! Free electives give you a well rounded college experience and allow you sample other subjects to see if maybe something else is a better fit for your future.
Unsure of what courses you should consider? Here are some examples of some ways students choose to use their free elective courses.
Foreign Language
Do you think you have what it takes to learn another language? You can learn another language and get credit while doing it! Learning another language is something that will have countless benefits. Even just getting a basic grasp on another language can go a long way when traveling.
Study Abroad Programs
If you decide to study in the U.S. maybe you’ll want to do a semester study abroad where you you go study in another country. Using free elective credits for your study abroad is a great idea to give you more options on where you can go. Many study abroad programs are major specific so using free electives is the best way to expand your choices.
Photography
One of the most popular college electives is photography. If you have a creative side and want to learn all about how to take the perfect photos then this an elective worth considering. Introduction level photography courses will give you an overview of how to work a camera and the fundamentals of photography.
Psychology
Learn the inner workings of the human psyche. Taking an introduction to psychology course will take you on a journey through major psychological concepts. The knowledge you gain in this course will give you an insight into emotion, development, memory and psychopathology.
Speech
If you’re a weak public speaker then taking a speech class will be beneficial for you. During your speech class you’ll get to present speeches in front of your peers on a variety of topics. Often times professors will let you present on topics you’re knowledgeable on so that the class can learn something new and fun.
There is also lots of other options but those are some of the most common and useful. Keep an open mind when taking your free elective courses, who knows it could turn into your future career!

Why More Students Are Choosing a Community College
Last week we had the great pleasure of visiting Valencia College at their campus in Orlando, Florida! After talking with Talia, Director of International Student Recruitment at Valencia College, and May, a current international student from Brazil, we learned why students at this community college never want the ride to end!
To help you catch-up, here is quick summary of everything we covered. You can also watch the video below.
Student Life
It was clear after meeting May that she loves going to theme parks with her friends! One of the coolest things about Valencia College’s location is that it’s close to the world’s best theme parks such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. In fact, May told me that this month she and her friends went to Universal Studios thirteen times!
But there is so much more to Orlando, Florida than sunny weather and theme parks. May said that the city is filled with diversity. No matter where you are from you’ll find something that connects you to home, like food!
Affordability and Financial Aid
One of the biggest benefits of going to a community college is that they’re far less expensive than a traditional four-year college. As Talia explains, your tuition at Valencia is forty to fifty percent less than the tuition at a public university.
If you’re worried about paying for school, Valencia has a convenient payment plan option. Talia explains that students don’t have to pay their tuition upfront but can choose to spread out their payments either by semester or month. You can also work on-campus to help pay for some expenses, like May does!
There are also many scholarships available to help their international students pay for college. The International Linkage Institute is a scholarship that lets international students pay in-state tuition rather than the out-of-state tuition rate that’s more expensive. There’s also scholarships available that you can apply for once you’re a student at Valencia.
Building Your Resume
Talia explained that community colleges are known for serving the community’s businesses and industries. Because of their partnership with the community the professors at Valencia have experience and connections within businesses in and around Orlando. These connections have helped many students at Valencia get internships or involved in volunteer work.
May says that the first thing you need when you apply for an internship could be a letter of recommendation, and the first person that you’ll ask will most likely be a professor!
Another way to build your resume is getting involved on-campus. Valencia has over sixty different clubs on campus, and can help you develop your resume even further. May is part of the biggest club on campus, Visa Club!
For most students, after you graduate and finish your two-year degree at Valencia, you can do optional practical training (OPT). After, when you transfer and graduate from a four-year college you can do a second OPT. You could work twice during your time in the US!
Transfer to a Four-Year Degree Program
Valencia makes sure that after you graduate you will successfully transfer to one of the twelve state universities in Florida. As Talia explains in the video- you have many options after you graduate from Valencia, like choosing to study in a different state. The most popular option is Direct Connect into University of Central Florida. This program guarantees 100% admission into UCF, one of the largest schools in the US, after you graduate from Valencia.
English Language Program
If you’re not quite ready to study in college, Valencia has year-round Intensive English Language classes for all types of English learners. Based off your English language skills they will place you in the appropriate English class. These small class sizes have convenient hours, and the length of the program can be as short as one month to two years.
Valencia College is the start to an amazing ride, as May explains, by the end you want to get back on! At Valencia, you’re not just going to school but you’re part of a community that offers endless support and opportunity. Come see why over 12,000 international students choose Valencia College!

Join Our Live Video Event As We Visit Valencia College
Join our live video event as we visit Valencia College at their campus in Orlando, Florida on Friday, October 20th 2017.
In this free event you’ll have the opportunity to ask your questions to Talia, the Director of the International Student Office. You’ll also meet May, a current international student at Valencia College from Brazil.
Life In Orlando, Florida
Not only will you be able to ask questions during the event, but you will also learn why many international students choose to study at Valencia College. For starters, Valencia College is located where the sun shines year-round and fun is just around the corner. Orlando is home to theme parks such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. When you’re not riding rollercoasters at Universal’s Harry Potter World, you can enjoy sporting events like an Orlando Magic basketball game or an Orlando City soccer game. There’s also tons of live music events, shopping, clubs and food you can enjoy!
Low Tuition Cost
On top of all that, Valencia was named the “best community college in the nation” by the Aspen Institute. One of the reasons why Valencia College received this recognition is because of their low tuition cost. International students at Valencia College pay 40% less than at a Florida public university. In fact, 90% of Valencia’s international students choose to study here because of the low cost. Valencia also offers many scholarships just for their international students.
Two-Year Degree
During the event you will also learn what an A.A. degree is. Valencia College primarily offers two-year associate degree programs. After graduation, those first two years count towards your bachelor’s degree. Many people choose to study at a community college because it prepares them better for a four-year college. For students that study at Valencia it guarantees that they will be accepted into a four-year Florida school. This can be a good choice for you if you think you might need extra help your first few years in college. Later you can apply want to a top-tier university that would normally be harder to apply for.
Now that we’ve gotten your attention, it’s time for you to mark your calendar for our live-video event with Valencia College!

Find a Homestay Program in the United States of America
When making the decision to study abroad or travel deciding where you will stay should be at the top of your list. One of the best ways to really experience a culture is by doing a homestay program.
What is a Homestay?
Homestay program companies arrange for you to live with local hosts or families during your studies. Homestay programs can vary from renting a room to full immersion with your host family. With a homestay program you usually have your own room and join the family for meals and be a part of their daily routine. Most homestay accommodations usually have children since they want their children to meet international students and get exposure to a different culture.
The American Homestay Network
While there are a lot of options for finding a homestay, you’re better off using a reputable service. Our friends over at the American Homestay Network (AHN) are here to help you find your new home in the USA. AHN will place you in a safe and comfortable environment and help get you settled into the American way of life.
Setting up your homestay through the American Homestay Network (AHN) offers a guaranteed private bedroom, internet access, and a meal plan. In addition to the support of your host family, you will also be assigned a local homestay manager, who will provide backup support through a 24/7 emergency phone number.
Why should you do a Homestay?
There are quite a few reasons why doing a homestay is a great accommodation option. Homestays are helpful for orientation, value, cultural experiences, language, making friends and for safety.
Orientation
Your homestay host will be able to assist you when you get to the U.S. with things such as transportation, shopping and banking. This will make your orientation smoother and have less to worry about.
Cost
Host families aren’t typically looking to profit off your stay with them and the cost is typically lower than getting your own apartment or living in the dorms. You’ll get the full American cultural experience by living among actual Americans to give you a truly local experience.
Language
If you want to improve your English skills then communicating and living with English speakers will drastically improve your vocabulary! Your host family will be happy to help you improve your language skills.
Friendship
Oftentimes your host family will have other children possibly close to your age that you can make friends with. This will help you to more easily assimilate into the American culture.
Safety
One of the most important things is your safety. Your host family will make sure you make it home every day and to provide you with emotional support.
If you are looking for the full experience when living in the U.S. then a homestay may be the perfect option!

Fall Festivals and Activities for International Students To Attend In The US
As the leaves turn from green to bright orange, red, and yellow, students like you start pouring into colleges. Although fall in the US always directly correlates with a new school year, getting ready for classes isn’t the only focus students have during this time. The fall semester brings with it a variety of activities that international students should experience while being in the United States. Some of these events can be found in many different cities around the US while others are unique to certain regions of the country. Here are a few popular festivals and activities to seek out and enjoy this fall between classes.
The Renaissance Festival
Personally, this was one of my favorite festivals to go to when I lived in Kansas. The Renaissance Festival opens its doors on Labor Day weekend and goes on until mid-October. This festival displays kings, pirates, gypsies, knights, wizards and more. Artists from the surrounding areas participate to bring a medieval ambiance to your day. They have themed weekends and plenty of entertaining events like jousting, hula hoop competitions, and costumes contests. They also have similar festivals in Minnesota, Florida, Michigan and Missouri. If you want to enjoy a day surrounded by royalty or share a meal with a couple of buccaneers, you will not want to miss this festival.
5K Color Run
If you like to exercise, the Color Run will be a fun activity to attend. The organizers suggest that you wear white clothing because as you make the 5 kilometer run, they will throw colored chalk at you. This of course results in you being covered in different colors and having a great time while being physically active. This 5K can be found in many cities in the US as well as different countries around the world! The 5K Color Run is a family friendly and pet friendly event. Put on your tennis shoes, throw on a white shirt and you will be ready to participate in this 5K!
The Lantern Fest
If you are a fan of Disney movies, this festival is a must. In the movie Tangled, every year during Rapunzel’s birthday, the king, queen, and townspeople release hundreds of lanterns into the air to honor the princess and guide her home. This is what you will see at the Lantern Fest. With your ticket, you will receive a lighter, a flashlight, a lantern and supplies to make s’mores. Once the night has fallen, everyone lights up their lanterns and lets them fly away at the same time. The have live music and food while you wait for the evening and it usually takes place during the fall and winter months in many cities around the US.
Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Carving
The United States produces around 13 million acres of corn. Once the corn has been harvested, it leaves a trail of corn stalks behind. Farmers who host corn mazes carefully plant their corn to create artistic designs that grow into corn mazes or labyrinths. Corn mazes have become popular as it’s a way to support local farmers and it provides a natural tourist attraction for families and friends. This is great fall activity as the corn harvest commences in October and ends late November. Many of these same farmers also plant pumpkin patches nearby so visitors can choose their own Halloween pumpkin directly from the patch. International students throughout the US can enjoy this activity during a weekend while studying in the US.
Halloween!
Costumes, candy, trick-or-treating, and bonfires… Enough said! Halloween is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world. However, in the United States Halloween is the second most popular holiday of the year. The festivities during Halloween are endless. Many colleges and universities will have activities and groups around campus that host Halloween costume parties. If you are an international student in the US, mark your calendar! October 31st is great day to go out and immerse yourself in the cultural festivities of this holiday.
With all of these festivals and activities, international students can distract themselves from their studies for a little while. There are many more festivals and activities that take place during the fall. Don’t forget to get out of your comfort zone, invite some of your new friends to go with you, and make memories during your study abroad experience in the US.
